See how we added a whole new multi-faceted living space to a backyard of a young family with three girls growing up in a modern home in the Town & Country community of St. Louis. What was once an otherwise unused side-yard space is now a stylish and welcoming outdoor living space featuring a Belgard paver patio, outdoor grill island, built-in trampoline, hot tub, fire pit, and surrounding retaining wall that functions as seating around the modern fire feature.

At this residence, the home backs up to a wooded area with most of the yard to the side of the house with a hillside and a newly constructed retaining wall to the edge of Des Peres Road. The yard was simple turf grass and didn’t provide for much functional space. The kids could play in the grass, but there was no space for entertaining or sitting. The house has a second level deck with stairs leading down to the yard, making it a perfect place to create a new outdoor living space.
BEFORE
In the photo above, you can see how the yard isn’t doesn’t provide for much function with the steep then gradual slope and plain grass doesn’t add much natural beauty.
AFTER
The yard was renovated to include key features that the family could enjoy. A new stone staircase now leads visitors safely down the hillside, complete with walkway lights and plantings. The patio was constructed using Belgard Dimensions patio pavers in Scandina Gray. The retaining walls surrounding the sunken patio design were created with Belgard Ashlar Tandem in ‘Shelby’ color blend. The grill counter top was cut and installed by Titan Granite in Fenton, MO. The border edge detail around the fire pit are Dark Charcoal Holland Pavers.
Now the house has outdoor features that can be enjoyed year-round! Nice evenings can be spent grilling outside or sitting around the fire pit. Kids can play safely on the inground trampoline while the parents hang out around the outdoor dining table or relaxing in the outdoor hot tub.

Evergreens were planted around the new patio next to the hot tub, to provide natural privacy screening between the neighboring properties. Because who doesn’t want a little privacy while unwinding in the hot tub!
